Mindfulness programme
I have an understanding that any type of transition can be difficult, so I devised a Mindfulness Programme designed for Positive Behaviour Management in children and young people which fits in with the Social, Emotional and Learning (SEL) Framework, this programme was promoted in 2021 on the National Extension College (NEC) blog website.
Mindfulness is a very powerful strategy within the larger field of SEL and can help to create the life you want by tapping into your 5 senses. Mindfulness cultivates an open-hearted way to promote the ability to show a deep care and understanding of both the self and others. To ‘feel’ better about ourselves; we need to ‘feel’ our SELF; and we need to ‘feel’ a better sense of our SELF. Because you are the inspiration, the hope and the light of a creative and joyful future. In developing evidence-based behaviour change interventions in other factors would be physical/play activities, diet etc.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is essential as it is a tool which children, young people need to be resilient, to be problem solvers and to be good people. SEL is about the ‘holistic’ development of children and young people. Similarly, they need personal competencies to be successful which helps them to relate and navigate the world around them.
- Does the child understand self-awareness?
- Does the child understand social awareness?
- Does the child have self-management or negative thoughts, emotions and behaviours?
- Good decision making to reach their outcomes and goals
- Relationship skills
There is a Public Health crisis regarding our children and young people as they are suffering more stress than ever before; thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic and modern society. During development most brain networks are locally organised – area near each other work together to accomplish a cognitive task. The stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, on the developing brain and depending on whether they are sustained and intense can lead to cognitive deficits of low self-esteem, learning difficulties, memory gaps, heightened emotional wellbeing and challenging behaviours. Certain children are more prone to external stimuli or emotional stress than others and find it difficult to regulate and manage their emotions through skills intended to develop healthy relationships, confront difficult situations and bolster motivation to achieve academic success. Some children who suffer stress are more vulnerable to health conditions including sleep disturbances, nightmares, bed wetting, skin diseases and infections. They are maybe even more prone to more accidents. Other behaviour changes are refusing to attend school and behaviours which challenge. I take a child-centred approach and am also a Positive Behaviour Specialist, so my aim is to intervene and reduce preventing school-wide problem behaviours with individualized interventions for students who do not respond to broader prevention and harm reduction strategies and to build bridges in improving a child or young person’s life, particularly when they are displaying challenging behaviours. Engaging in mindfulness is a way to prevent behaviours which challenge by creating a setting which reduces the likelihood of the Antecedent-Behaviour Consequences (ABC).
